If you guys didn’t know, I’m a huge super hero movie nerd. I’ve been excited for the Black Panther solo movie since I saw him in the Civil War trailer. But this isn’t about the movie.
Two albums were released in conjunction with the movie, and both are worth your time, although neither really fit the style of this site. I’m gonna drop them here anyway.
This one is a Kendrick Lamar-helmed hip hop concept album based on the movie. Think Jay-Z’s “American Gangster,” but with a bunch of different rappers, Kendrick being the common thread.
It is really cohesive for the circumstances. I’ve listened to it front to back a few times in the 2 weeks it’s been out. It is good as a complete project despite the fact that there is only 1 standout song that I would have interest in listening to outside of the context of the full album (X).
This is the first album to be featured on this site that I haven’t actually listened to yet. I haven’t seen the movie yet and I don’t want the music spoiled.
The reason I feel comfortable about putting it here is that it is composed by one of my favorite musicians, Ludwig Goransson. He has been on fire for the past few years, killing the “Creed” soundtrack, drawing “Awaken, My Love” out of Childish Gambino, and now scoring this blockbuster.
