Although my preference is the era of funk and soul that came after Motown, I still do love that Motown sound. Earl Van Dyke’s album “That Motown Sound” was a side project featuring Earl and his fellow Funk Brothers playing instrumental versions of some of Motown’s biggest hits.
Van Dyke takes the lead on the tracks with him electric organ while the other musicians play their parts very much in the same way they are played on the original recordings, preserving the vintage soul sound.
No standout tracks for this one. Just throw it on next time you need some music on in the background. Cooking, dinner, yard work, get together, etc. The link below is a re-release from 2012, called “The Motown Sound,” that includes the original album, plus some live recordings and songs from the Motown vault.
