Steely Dan is very different than most of the music I recommend here on the surface. It isn’t funky or soulful, the two styles I tend to gravitate to. But it does meet my 2 item checklist for good music: it grooves, and has great musicianship.
“Aja” is my favorite album by Steely Dan. It is their most polished work, and probably the most digestible outside of “Can’t Buy A Thrill.” It’s is an impeccably produced jazz-rock classic.
Standout tracks include, “Deacon Blues,” “Black Cow,” “Josie,” and the title track.
Side note: Steely Dan accompanied by the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl is the best concert I’ve ever been to.
Second side note: Feel free to steal my fantasy football team name, Aja Green.
